The South University quarter rhythm: two formats, eight doors a year

South University runs quarter-based sessions in two lengths, accelerated 5-to-5.5-week and standard 10-to-11-week, identical in contact hours, with new sessions opening roughly every five to six weeks. No fast lane exists; the strategy is choosing formats honestly and never wasting a session.

The short answer

Your timeline here is course count times session length, shaped by three levers. Format choice: the 5.5-week sprint packs the same deliverables into half the calendar, doubling weekly density, brilliant for single-course focus, brutal beside a heavy job. The eight-ish yearly starts, sessions began Aug 12, Sep 16, Oct 21, and Nov 25 in one recent stretch, let finished courses chain with near-zero idle time. And transfer credit trims the count at the door for qualifying coursework graded C-minus or better. Tuition bills per quarter credit hour at every pace, so speed saves calendar and salary-delay, never tuition, and we put that sentence in writing.

The formats carry identical content, so the choice is pure calendar strategy, and it is re-decidable every session, which almost nobody exploits and everybody should.

The rhythm playbook

  1. Sweep transfer at the door

Qualifying credits graded C-minus or better transfer in; at per-credit pricing every accepted course is cash and a session kept.

  2. Chain the sessions deliberately

Roughly eight doors a year means the next start is never far; book it before the current final week and drift never accumulates. Deliberate breathers before capstones are design, not drift.

  3. Match format to season

Sprint the quiet quarters, stroll the brutal ones, and let the B-rule arithmetic veto optimism in nursing sessions.

  4. Keep the weeks mechanical

Week-N deliverables on subscription through the desks, so the rhythm survives the weeks your job does not cooperate.

What we refuse to promise

  • No compressed sessions: 5.5 weeks is the compressed one, and it costs density, not less work
  • No tuition savings from speed: per-quarter-credit billing charges the same at every pace
  • No sprint recommendations against your calendar's evidence, the honest answer is sometimes the 11-week format run excellently
  • No shortcuts through practicum hours or defenses; those pace themselves and we schedule around them
